The handles are contoured to sit securely and comfortably in one's hand even when wet and are formed from black polypropylene. It should stand up well to dishwashing, and many of the consumer reviewers do put their knives in the dishwasher, although the manufacturer recommends hand washing. Also these polypropylene handles are not porous like some woods are so they are more hygienic. The construction of the handles also is more hygienic since cracks or crevasses to harbor bacteria have been eliminated.
